Relax on the Endless Beaches

No visit to the Algarve is complete without spending time on its pristine beaches, and Tavira boasts some of the finest. Take a short ferry ride to Ilha de Tavira, a stunning island with miles of golden sand. Here, you can unwind, soak up the sun, and take refreshing dips in the crystal-clear waters of the Atlantic. The beaches are family-friendly, with calm and shallow waters, making them perfect for children to splash and play.

Witness Spectacular Sunrises over the Sea

In addition to its daytime charm, Tavira offers a magical experience that unfolds every morning. If you venture to the heights of the town, you’ll be rewarded with a perfect sunrise over the sea. When I was visiting Tavira, this daily spectacle has become one of my favorite moments.

Imagine standing on a vantage point, overlooking the town and the vast expanse of the ocean. The world awakens as the first rays of light pierce through the horizon, illuminating the sky with a mesmerizing palette of soft pinks, fiery oranges, and golden hues.

It’s a truly awe-inspiring sight, and I encourage you to wake up early and experience this natural beauty firsthand. Find a spot on the heights of Tavira, perhaps near the Castelo de Tavira or the Maria Nova Hotel and prepare to be captivated by the serene majesty of the sunrise.

As the sun emerges from beneath the sea, casting its warm glow upon the landscape, you’ll feel a sense of tranquility and renewal. It’s a perfect moment to reflect, appreciate the beauty of nature, and set a positive tone for the day ahead.

Beach Access via the Small Railway or Ferry

Here’s a special tip especially for families: If you’re looking for a unique and convenient way to access the beach, hop on the small railway that runs south of Tavira. This charming train takes you directly from Pedras d´El Rei to the beautiful Praia do Barril beach. There you can also discover the “graveyard” for the old anchors of the tuna fishing ships.

Another nice way to explore the natural wonders surrounding Tavira is by taking the short and inexpensive ferry ride from the old town to the Island of Tavira. The ferry departs from the quayside near the old town, and within minutes, you’ll find yourself gliding across the crystal-clear waters of the Ria Formosa. The gentle breeze kisses your face as you marvel at the stunning coastal views and the picturesque scenery unfolding before your eyes.
